David's Godfather Blog: Week 5 Comments

For Week 5, I commented on a blog post by Fion. I told her that it was excellent that she went and looked to find more information about oranges. I told her that I agreed with her as oranges do occur when something bad occur. I also said that maybe the outside part of the orange means that the outside of Vito Corleone is rough but on the inside he is sweet.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 5:Archetypes

In relation to the Golden Spruce, it could be said that Grant Hadwin was a hero. This archetype is described as someone who's life is a series of well-marked adventures and endures hardship, even risk his life for the good of all. Hadwin was hero because he cut down a the Golden Spruce. This doing was heroic because it helped the Haida people focus less on a tree, but more on life. This is important because it shows how a hero can stand up for what he or she believes in, even if it may result in death. This is the same for Michael in the Godfather. He continues to lead the family business which in the end will cost him his life.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 4: Comments

This week I chose to comment on a blog post by Fion. I told her that I liked the way you question Joseph Campbell's idea of everyone having a voice in their heads(conscience). Specifically, I liked the way you questioned how we have a voice in our heads, but we choose not to listen to it. This idea could coincide with Joseph Campbell's idea that people should not let there heads run the show, but let the heart.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 4: The Hero's Journey

After watching the interview that Joesph Campbell had, I understand now that The Hero's Journey is something that occurs in everyone. Every person has to endure the experiences of which a hero does for example everyone at some point in their lives has to be involved in journey that takes them to another place, but they eventually come back to their origin and are able to live better. In the Godfather, Michael is forced to go to Sicily because he kills McCluskey ans Sollozso, but in the end he comes back to America and leads the family business. Joesph Campbell was able to explain the Hero's Journey from different culture which thought show how intellect Joesph Campbell was about cultures and even just in in general.

David's Godfather Blog Week 4: Class Act

This week, I have really liked the discussions that have been brought up in class that relate to the Godfather. An example of this was on Monday when we talked about the Golden Spruce and how Hadwin was similar to Michael as he might be considered a hero for cutting the tree down.

Arpreet's Week 3: Hero's Journey

This major scene really stood out to me. It was after Santino got killed by Barzini's men, where Michael, Vito, Tom Hagen, Clamenza and even Carlo were in the same room. The entire gang was sitting in a circle and Michael begins to say to Tom Hagen, you are no longer my Consigliere and then continues to say to Carlo that you will be my right hand man when we go to Las Vegas.

Godfather Vito Coreleone needed Santino and Tom Hagen because Santino was brutal and was willing to kill anyone without any questions; however Tom Hagen was a calm and gentle man.

Now, Michael, the next Godfather, does not need Ton Hagen to be his Consigliere because Michael is very calm, but he also has the brutal side of his brother, Santino, making him the perfect Godfather.

Arpreet's Week 3: The Human Condition

Well, Godfather Vito Coreleone is more casual towards the end of the movie. He show's very little interest in the family bussiness and he does not want to interfer with the soon to be new Godfather Michael Coreleone. Vito Coreleone begins to spend more time with family and is more calm. He also forgets many deals he had made in the past; however, he does not forget that Barzini killed his son, Santino, and he warns Michael that they will kill you too.

Arpreet's Week 3: Comments

I just commented on Rushil Soni's blog stating a job well done. Keeping an eye open for a minor thing could be seen through out the Godfather.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 3: Comments

I commented on Bhanesha blog post about the Don and camera angles. I told her that I agree that Don Corleone has some type of supernatural force because he does not die until he has the heart attack. There is something special about the same camera angle being taken with Micheal before we find out that he is the next Don.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 3: Class Act

For my week 3 blog posting of the Class Act, I will point out a snippet that was said. Manny stated that their might be a reason that every time Don Corleone has an orange something bad happens to him. When he gets shot, he was buying oranges and when he was playing with his grandson he was having and orange and ends up having a heart attack.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 3: The Human Condition

When discussing The Godfather the effect of family is always an important piece. While watching the last part of the movie, I saw that Santino and Michael havesome similar traits. The passion that they both have for the family is quite evident. Also, another thing that I noticed about the two is that people listen to them when they talk, even though sometimes their ideas may be far fetched. The work that has characters that are similar to Santino and Michael are Viola and Sebastian in Twelfth Night. The most oblivious similarity between the two is that they are twins. Another similarities between these two characters is that they have the same taste in women ? Well, overall it can be said that from these two works, the relationships that are had between siblings are something special.

Arpreet's Week 2: Hero's Journey

Michael has now departed to Sicily, Italy. He believes he is safe there and all of his worries are far away from him, but he was taken by surprise when 'they' killed his wife, Apollnia.
Michael is getting much more involved in the damily bussiness because his father is ill and his brother Sonny has been killed.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 2: The Human Condition

After watching the scenes that we watched today, I have fallen in love with Don Corleone. That way that he cares about his family is something unimaginable. When his son Santino dies, he shows so much emotion that captivates the audience. In comparison to another work that we have looked at this year, I think that Winston lacks family in 1984. If he had a family to cherish and love him, life could have been better even though he was under a strong dictatorship (the Party). Within Winston, I think there is an internal conflict that makes him resort to try and defy the Party. When it comes to Don Corleone, he does what he has to do to keep his family safe and make sure justice is served.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 2: Feedback

I commented on blog post made by Harroop about the Human Condition. I told her that I tend disagree with her argument about Michael not understanding himself. I told her that I feel that Michael is understanding that America does not like his families' culture. I also told her to do some proofreading.

Arpreet Week 2: Comments

I believe that commenting on other peoples blogs, helps the writer understand the movie more if the writer has made an error or has misinterpreted the meaning. I would to thank SEBASTIAN for correcting my mistake.

Arpreet Class Act: Week 2

Tears of joy or sadness.

The other day in class while watching the Godfather, the idea of foreshadowing was brought up when Luca was killed. When Luca entered the Sollozzo, fishes were seen on the window, and when they killed him, they sent fishes wrapped in a bag to the Coreleone family. That was Sollozzo families symbol.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 2: Class Act

Today's class was very informative for me. I was able to understand the key components of the Godfather. An important example that sticks out in my mind is the foreshadowing idea that is brought up. It is seen continually which leads me to believe that James Campbell has done this on purpose. During the section that we saw today I saw foreshadowing in the hospital and at the house.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 1: Comments

For week one, I commented on a blog post made by Geneva. I said that she did a good job of detecting the colors of Kay.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 1: The Human Condition

For this week I am going to focus on Malvolio and Michael. Malvolio was an outsider in Twelfth Night because he was not involved in the loop. He was so focused on being serious that he ended up being fooled by a letter he thought was given to him by Olivia. Human are deceived if they are unable to recognize the truth . When it comes to Michael, he is an outsider in his situation because he went to war and fought against Italy. A quote that shapes this is when he says, " That's my family, but not me." Micheal has decided to defend the country he was born instead of defend the country of his family. Through this analysis the conclusion that can be made is that families need to stay together.

David's Godfather Blog: Week 1: Archetypes

As I look through the Hero's Journey package that was given to us, I see that Don Corleone connects to it. An example of how he is part of the hero's journey is by the way he is able to be a warrior. So far he has been shot by his enemies, but by his personality I can tell that he will rise up again and be stronger than he was before.
