David's Godfather Blog: Week 3: The Human Condition

When discussing The Godfather the effect of family is always an important piece. While watching the last part of the movie, I saw that Santino and Michael havesome similar traits. The passion that they both have for the family is quite evident. Also, another thing that I noticed about the two is that people listen to them when they talk, even though sometimes their ideas may be far fetched. The work that has characters that are similar to Santino and Michael are Viola and Sebastian in Twelfth Night. The most oblivious similarity between the two is that they are twins. Another similarities between these two characters is that they have the same taste in women ? Well, overall it can be said that from these two works, the relationships that are had between siblings are something special.

  1. Santino and Michael are definately foils for each other. Similar in intention and blood, yet completely different. They both demonstrate a different balance of what a Don should be or needs to do. In the Godfather, Santino is fairly hot headed and acts on impulse. Whereas Michael, is cool and collected on his thoughts and waits to act with precision or with "offers that [people] cant refuse". The idea of Santino and Michael as yin and yang to each other is ominent; however, I have to disagree with your discussion of Viola and Sebastian in the Twelfth Night. Although they are siblings and represent opposing characteristics, they do not really represent the differences like Santino and Michael. Firstly, Viola and Sebastian do not truly reunite until the fourth Act. This does not really emphasize their close relationship until Viola is confronted by Olivia and the Duke. But overall, Michael and Santino are similar and highlight the differences in each other.
